Juveniles finish Indoor Season in Style
The indoor season came to a close on Saturday in Athlone at Day 3 of the National Juvenile
Indoor Championships. Well done to all our juveniles who were out competing. The club had
great success across the day with both Leo Smith and Lily O’Neill picking up individual
medals. Leo finished Joint 2 nd in the Boys U12 High Jump. His clearance of 1.30m saw him
and another athlete finish with the same record meaning they shared the silver medals. Lily
finished 2 nd in the Girls U15 Triple Jump with a jump of 9.73m which interestingly was
further than the previous Championship Record. The Girls U14 team of Roisin, Faye, Sinead
and Sophie) capped off the day with a fantastic bronze in the 4x200m relay.
There were a great selection of other athletes competing from the club across a wide range
of events. In the relays the U12 Girls finished in 7 th place overall. The team of Penelope, Ava,
Realtin and Meabh qualified through in 2 nd place and ran brilliantly in the final to finish in 7 th .
The U15 Girls also qualified in 2 nd place from their heats but an infringement in the final saw
them miss out. The U17 Mixed Relay team of Will, Eoghan, Karen and Elanna finished 5 th in
the heat of the U17 Mixed Relay. Liam Doyle was also in action in the U12 High Jump when
his jump of 1.15m saw him finish in 14 th place. Aoife Lawlor also cleared 1.30m in the U13
High Jump which saw her finish in 8 th place. Aaliyah Troy narrowly missed out on a medal
when her new PB of 9.95m saw her finish 4 th in the U17 Girls Triple Jump. Eoghan Mitchell
was the final athlete in action when his throw of 8.33m placed him in 10 th overall. It was
great to see so many juveniles out representing the club during the indoors and competing
at such a high level. A massive well done to all, and a special word of thanks to all the
coaches involved in preparing our juveniles over the past number of months.
Laois Intermediate Road Championships
Congrats to all club athletes who took part in the Laois Intermediate Road Championships
held in Killeen on Sunday. St Abbans hosted the event in the home of St Abban himself, with
both the local school and housing estate named after the Saint. On a beautiful day for racing
Sarah Fleming was the only St Abbans athlete in a small women’s field. Sarah took up the
running from early on and led for the majority of the way only to be passed in the closing
stages by Rebecca Condell of Ballyroan/ Abbeyleix. The Men’s race saw a larger field
assembled. Jack McMahon led the race from gun to tape to take victory in 19:36. The first St
Abbans athlete hoem was David McEvoy who finished just outside the medals in 4 th place.
Tom Kenny was next in 6 th , followed by Stephen Lawler in 9 th and Billy Ramsbottom in 10 th .
Conor Barry, Liam Byrne and James Nolan completed the team. When the scores were
added together St Abbans finished in 2 nd place with 29 points, 7 points behind Oughaval and
just ahead of Ballyroan/Abbeyleix on 34points. Many thanks to all the stewards who helped
out and also to those who prepared tea and refreshments for those in attendance. The final
race of the roads calendar, the Master’s will take place in Portarlington in 3 weeks’ time,
hosted by St Michael’s A.C.
