National Indoor Juvenile Championships, 6+7th April, Athlone
Day 2 and Day 3 of the National Indoor Juvenile Championships took place over the weekend with a large group of athletes from St Abban’s A.C qualifying through to compete. Medals are always tough to come by at these championships and this was also the case across the weekend. Joshua Crosby did manage to claim a medal, when he took a silver medal in the Boys U15 Shot Putt with a throw of 13.23m.
Also in action on Day 2 were Cormac Dineen in the U 17 Boys Walk, Adam Kelly in the U15 Boys High Jump where he cleared 1.45m. Joseph Lawler in the U12 Boys Long Jump who had a best of 3.90m. Josh Delaney in the U13 Long Jump who jumped 3.93m and Molly O Sullivan in the U14 Girls Shot Putt who had a best throw of 7.67m. John Delaney and Lily O Neill were both unlucky to miss out on medals in the 400m and 60m sprint. John finished in 4th in an indoor PB of 51:31 while Lily finished 6th in the final of the 60m sprint.
On Sunday the club had 13 athletes in action across a wide range of events. In the Boys U13 Hurdles Josh Delaney was 6th in his heat while Shane Kelly made it through the heat and had to settle for 8th in a highly competitive final. In the Boys U13 Shot Putt Cathal English had a best throw of 7.81m. Lily O’Neill was back again after her sprint yesterday, this time in the 60m Hurdles. Lily just missed out on qualification from her heat. Laura Ayers finished in 7th place in her heat of the 800m. In the Boys U14 Long Jump, James O Mara jumped 4.28m. In the Boys U15, Adam Kelly also made it through his heat and had to settle for 7th in the final. Cara English cleared 1.35m in the Girls U16 High Jump. In the Boys U16 High Jump Eoghan Mitchell cleared 1.50m while Edon Nimani threw 10.42m in the Shot Putt. Jame Hyland was 4th in his heat of the Boys U17 60m Hurdles. John Delaney was one again agonisingly close to a medal when he finished 4th in the Boys U18 800m. With 4 athletes crossing the finish line in a blanket finish John was just edged out and had to settle for 4th. Katie Baldwin was also just outside the medals in the Girls U19 60m Hurdles finishing in 4th place.
A huge well done to all the athletes, coaches and families who have helped prepare these athletes for such championships. We look forward to tracking the progress of these athletes over the summer as they continue to progress and improve.
